5Excellent Sprayer for Weekend Projects
By Books and Woodworking
This worked perfect the first time I used it. I have never used a sprayer before and so was I was not sure I would have good results. I had heard others say how much trouble they had using sprayers. I read the instructions several times before I used it. I wanted to make sure I understood the controls. I do wood working and to get a smooth finish, I had always used spray cans of lacquer. But spray cans take forever, the over-spray can be overwhelming, the $$$ really add up, and finally it takes forever to do a large project. Spraying with a can just does not give an even look on larger projects. Also I found that the temperature makes a big difference on how well the spray looks. The higher the temperature the more over-spray I seemed to get.

I found that this sprayer solved all the problems mentioned above. I just sprayed a 6 foot high bookcase, 3 shelves, a checker board, a wooden tray, and a wooden box. All in less than 40 minutes. I just kept putting light coats on each. I used a water base polyurethane from Min-wax and the clean up was very easy. I used the 1.5 needle and put on 3 or 4 coats. I did not need to water down the polyurethane 6 each: Minwax Water Base Polycrylic (25555000), just used it right out of the can. I stood the bookcase on its base and found that it was easy to spray the back, sides, top and insides all without having any runs. Had I used spray cans, I would been in the garage all day and exhausted. Also, after an hour, I took everything back inside the house. With the water based polyurethane, there is almost no smell or odor.

This model is probably not a professional unit, but I think that the results are as good as a professional model. If I were to use this every day for long periods of time I would suggest the $800 units. But for my needs, this is a great price and I got great results.

This HVLP technology is great. With water based wood conditioner, stains, and polyurethane the clean up is easy. I am not sure I will ever use a lacquer again.

Also, this model here only comes with 1 needle - the 2.0. Other sellers offer two needles 2.0 and 1.5 for the same price. So be sure to check out how many needles come with your purchase. If you see a cheaper price, it may be because they are only giving you 1 needle and maybe charging for shipping. The lowest price may not be the better deal. I see the needles cost about $40. I bought mine at Woodcraft for $319 - they were having a $40 discount for a few weeks. Mine came with 2 needles. So be sure you know what is in the box.

5Excellent HVLP
By J. Little
Have had this unit for about 3 months and use it 3 or 4 times a week for spraying latex paint. Ideal for medium to light duty situations. Use it to spray wooden toys in batches of 50 to 100. Works well with primer and finish coats. I thin latex paint down about 20-25% and works great. Very little overspray. Good uniform coverage. Hose is a friction connection so comes loose once in a while but other than that it is an excellent unit for the money. Am buying a second unit to speed up the process.

5Excellent sprayer, for its intended purpose.
By RTM
I bought this gun for an on-site spray of lattice in which there would be too much collateral damage from overspray with my airless sprayer.

Out of the box, it is pretty much good to go immediately. Just add (and thin if necessary) paint, and turn it on. No assembly required. Spray can be changed from vertical fan, to horizontal fan, to a spot, all with the spin of the tip on the heavy duty all-aluminum gun. Turbine is relatively loud (sounds like a small shop-vac) and runs the entire time it's turned on, regardless of whether you're actually shooting paint through the gun. More on this later.

SHOOTING LATEX

This is a situation in which the cheapest paint is best suited, as cheaper latex tends to be much thinner and requires less watering down to make it sprayable. Most latex WILL require thinning to go through this sprayer, even with the larger 2.5MM tip that can be purchased separately. Unthinned, if it even sprays at all, it'll be such a coarse finish with large droplets that it won't be suitable for the majority of applications. Thinned and/or with the larger tip, you'll probably still get some orange-peel effect even in the best of cases. The turbine just doesn't have the juice to push the thicker paint through and atomize it properly. Realistically, this is a weakness of all HVLP sprayers but one with more volume could likely do the job better.

Also of note, when a darker color is thinned it tends to lighten up a bit due to thinning out the colorant. I noticed this when painting a custom made shelf for a center channel speaker in my media room; I intended for the shelf to blend in with the wall so it was painted with the same paint (only thinned and sprayed on the shelf and rolled on the wall), and the shelf is noticeably lighter. This won't be an issue if you aren't putting two differently painted surfaces next to each other and attempting to match them, but it's worth mentioning.

SHOOTING OIL BASED ENAMELS/LACQUERS

This is what HVLP is really meant for. These paints are inherently thinner in viscosity and can be thinned much successfully with less finish degradation. The fine finish tip does a GREAT job. I suppose you COULD do automotive painting with it (they like to use that as a possible use), but being that the turbine runs the entire time you're spraying I'd imagine it'd get overheated pretty quickly and/or lead to premature failure. I sprayed a slightly thinned Rustoleum Enamel through it with a 2.5MM tip (intentionally) to produce a coarse "industrial" finish on a component rack, and it came out GREAT. Looks like one you'd buy for about 1/4 the price.

CLEANUP

Latex: Very easy, just empty the cup (it's coated in Teflon so it empties/cleans easily) and fill it with water, then spray it through. Tip can be removed quickly for cleaning with an included pipe-cleaner type gizmo. One MAJOR advantage over airless, no paint in the hose or in the actual machine itself so it's a breeze.

Oil-based: Tougher than latex, but not bad. Empty cup and add paint thinner to it, then spray it through. Remember what I said about air always going through the gun regardless of whether or not you're spraying? The air comes out around the tip to form the type of spray you've chosen. My first time cleaning after using oil based, I was going to shoot the thinner into a quart sized paint can for re-use (I generally get a couple uses from thinner to keep from excessively disposing it). I was shooting black paint at the time, and when the thinner came out the tip and the air stream hit the liquid in the bottom of the can, it led to a massive black paint thinner volcano all over my arms and face. The only antidote for getting this concoction off skin is acetone, which is fairly uncomfortable. So keep that in mind.

BOTTOM LINE

Beware of the sprayer's limitations when shooting latex paint. It's great for smaller jobs or jobs where you need to shoot many colors in succession as cleanup is a breeze compared with other sprayers. Very lightweight and portable. I'd recommend it for the casual user in a heartbeat.
