I bought the BDPH400 to finish some cabinets, doors and drawers with water based lacquer and polyurethane that is designed for spraying. No thinning was required. It took a few adjustments to get the flow control set to allow for just enough paint to spray onto the surface. After that, the sprayer laid down an even coat with very few imperfections which were easily corrected with a little sanding. I held the unit in an upright position as much as possible. When I sprayed the inside bottom of the cabinets there were a few drips from paint that accumulated in the nozzle. I did have to hold the sprayer in about every position except upside down and it worked as expected.
I used the BDPH400 8 times to complete this project. Each time I was able to paint more pieces, get better results, and I developed more confidence in the sprayer. The key to success is to clean the nozzle assembly frequently and thoroughly during use. On the final coat of lacquer and polyurethane I cleaned out the nozzle between every two cabinets to avoid the issues I ran into on earlier coats. This was not a big deal since it takes about a minute to take the nozzle off, drop the three pieces in a coffee can of warm water to wipe off the paint, and put the nozzle back on the sprayer. When i needed to wait between coats, I dropped the nozzle in water and put a piece of blue tape over the end of the paint delivery tube. The lid on the side of the paint canister is a great feature that eliminates messy refills. The HVLP unit is a little louder than a Dustbuster and the long hose kept the unit away from the work area.
Cleanup was easy since I only used water based products. I was concerned about using the unit to spray clear polyurethane after using white lacquer. It wasn't an issue because the unit cleaned up so well by running warm water with dish soap through the sprayer and then flushing the tube with water during sprayer cleanup. After eight uses, the BDPH400 looks like new inside and out.
I'm a perfectionist and this project turned out about as perfect as possible considering this was my first time using a sprayer.
I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because I haven't had it long enough to determine how durable it is. That said, I feel a little guilty about the four stars since the sprayer has a two year warranty and I got more than my $100 of use out of this sprayer already.

The last Black & Decker portable sprayer I used, I ended up painting my whole house with it so you can never underestimate the versatility of these small sprayers because there probably isn't any task that you can't do with them.
With this sprayer I have so far sprayed my garage door and back deck and I find it is as good as my previous sprayer if not slightly better so I would have no trepidations about using it for a bigger job.
As always with these small sprayers you are limited by the amount paint you have in the container you attach to it so you have to keep an eye on this. Also whenever you finish your painting then it is best to clean everything very thoroughly or you will find that you will get poor results when you use it again. You have to understand that sprayers use a fine jet so keeping the components clean is very important.
Overall I would rate the performance of this sprayer has being very high for a small sprayer. I would also rate the build quality as excellent. The weight (even with the container full of paint) is easily manageable and with the pour assist bucket which they include and easy-fill canister (it opens on the side so you don't have to remove it from the sprayer) then it is very easy to refill. I also like that the length of the air hose is 20 foot, this is important because you don't want to constantly have to keep moving the air compressor when you are in the middle of a paint job. Another cool thing is that you can rotate the spray tip so you can paint horizontally, vertically or in a round spray pattern. This is important if you are painting something which needs a perfect finish and saves you having to keep altering the angle of the sprayer.
The only think you really have to watch is over-spray. With sprayers you really need ideal conditions (so no wind) and also you need to ensure any areas you don't want to paint are covered up because if you don't then you will get over-spray onto that area. This sprayer is really good and targets the area you are painting really well but it is something you have to watch out for. I usually have a long piece of cardboard in one hand (to cover the area I don't want to paint) and the sprayer in the other so I can do this process quickly.
Again I would rate this sprayer as very high and with even the smallest amount of experience you can quickly achieve excellent results and lets be honest who really wants to stand there with a paint brush for hours when you can use this and do the job in a lot less time and also have a lot more fun.

PAINTED THE FENCE SO MUCH FASTER THAN I HAD BEFORE IT DIDN'T EVEN FEEL LIKE WORK. EASY TO RUN AND CLEANUP -- FAST
