Worked great
By Dave
I bought this sprayer based on amazon reviews and was not disappointed.
There is a bit of a learning curve to setup and clean it, but it worked flawlessly. The written instructions are not
the best, but it comes with a DVD that helps. And once you understand it, the steps are easy to remember.
It's much better than the kind with a cup and well worth the extra money. It can spray in any direction and you only have to hold a light gun instead of a cup full of paint. I did 5 gallons of outdoor latex paint in about an hour. This one sucks the paint directly from the can. With the cup kind, I would have had to refill it 20 or 30 times. The cup kind are sometimes rated at several gallons per hour, but I'm assuming they are not including the endless refilling.
It's much faster and better than brushes or rollers. I was painting a shed with lots of grooves. I had tried painting it with a brush and spent hours trying to get the paint into every nook. Rollers would not have helped. The sprayer did the trick and in a fraction of the time.
The cleanup, never fun, was fairly painless. For water based paint, you can hook it to a hose and flush out the whole system. Probably took less time than cleaning brushes would have.
I got mine at Home Depot for $299.00. I wish I had spent the extra $100.00 for the XR7 since it can take a 0.017 tip and has wheels. It is better suited for 5 gallon cans. The XR5 is not heavy and is easy to move, but you have to haul the 5 gallon can and XR5 together. It has a 25' hose, so I only had to move it a couple of times.

Exploding Paint Machine - cleanup caution
By Tom North
Please vote so this will float to the top and help everyone avoid the painful cleanup we went through yesterday.
The cause (discounting my own stupidity:-) is that there is a finger clamp holding the large paint suction tube to the pump unit. When the pump is drawing in paint there is no problem. Unfortunately when you clean the unit you attach a garden hose to the tube. If the clamp is too high or too low on the tube the water pressure from the garden hose will blow off the paint loaded tube and blast paint all over your cleanup area. Now I need to pressure wash the concrete steps and paint my back door thanks to the factory not having put the clamp in the right place. Next time I will use a screw on type hose clamp! (I might also put a little Vaseline or wax on the unit so if I find another way to screw up it will be easier to clean.)
Otherwise the unit has been nicely reviewed. For us it sprayed latex perfectly at about 80% up on the pressure setting. The laminated card directions are OK but watching the DVD is much better. I have owned the Wagner Paint Crew unit with the tray top where you put the paint. This Graco system is really worth the extra cost.
Nice if Graco would have a sticker on the unit with a reminder list of priming and cleanup directions (for us occasional users). It was surprising how light the sprayer is. That's a plus for carrying around and storing but it doesn't really feel like a $300 tool. I would buy it again but very unhappy with the mess this simple assembly mistake caused.

Some of the Best $$$ I've Ever Spent
By Keith Whitfield
After doing some research on airless sprayers and having a not so good experience with another sprayer --manufacturer's name rhymes with "Bagner"--I decided I would spend a little more money and get a sprayer I could rely on. Graco is the brand my local paint store carries, so I knew if I needed/wanted extra tips or accessories, I could get them there. They didn't carry the X5 as they cater mainly to professionals, but the store manager said I "couldn't go wrong with a Graco product."
The sprayer came with everything I needed to complete my job: sprayer, 20ft hose, instruction manual and DVD. Set up is a breeze. The tip shipped with the unit handled the exterior acrylic latex with no problem. I sprayed my 12' x 20' (8' walls) in about an hour...including cleanup!
